GAIP: Summer quarter coverage
You’re covered by GAIP for the summer if you had UW-paid coverage during the previous three quarters (fall, winter, and spring quarters). In this case, you’re automatically enrolled in summer coverage, and you remain covered even if you aren’t working or taking classes during the summer. Coverage ends on September 30.
If you weren’t covered by GAIP during the past three quarters and you want to qualify for summer coverage, check you eligibility by reading the section below.
Eligibility for summer coverage
If you do not automatically qualify for GAIP coverage during the summer quarter, you may be eligible for coverage due to one of the circumstances below.
Positions starting during summer
The UW pays the monthly premium for student appointees with eligible summer quarter positions. To be eligible, you must be enrolled in at least two credits in at least one session; the position must be 50% or greater FTE, and paid in two pay periods, and you must hold a GAIP-eligible position.
Fellows and trainees with stipends
The UW pays the monthly premium for Fellows and Trainees in eligible summer quarter positions. To be eligible, you must be enrolled in at least two credits in at least one session; the position must be paid at least $800 per month, and paid in two pay periods; and you must hold a GAIP-eligible position.
Graduate research student assistant
Students working as Graduate Research Student Assistants (job code 10854) may also qualify for UW-Paid GAIP coverage due to hourly employment. To qualify, the student must work the number of hours equivalent to 50% FTE for two pay periods during summer quarter. Hours worked in another position are not included. Coverage begins retroactively to the first of the month in which the student met the equivalent 50% FTE requirement for the second pay period. This hourly position is limited to the summer quarter only.
Self-pay option during summer
If you held a UW-paid, GAIP-eligible position in spring, you can continue your GAIP coverage on a self-pay basis by completing and returning the self-pay election notice that LifeWise mails to you after mid-July.
If you held a UW-paid GAIP-eligible position in fall or winter, subsequently lost your UW-paid coverage, enrolled in the self-pay option at the time you lost your coverage, you can continue self-paying through the summer, until September 30.
Dependent coverage during summer
Your dependent enrollment status from spring quarter (if any) will be maintained throughout summer quarter, unless you elect to add or delete dependents by the summer quarter dependent enrollment deadline.
Since no payroll deductions will be taken during summer quarter, you will be billed directly by LifeWise for dependent coverage premiums. Payment must be made in full to LifeWise for the entire summer quarter on or before July 31. Failure to pay this billing will result in loss of dependent coverage.
If you do not receive an invoice from LifeWise by the middle of July, you need to contact LifeWise at 1-800-421-3531.
