CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Collect and analyze information for broadcast to the public on KUOW radio, including broadcast audio, web content, video, podcasts and events. This is the first level in a two-level series; the next level is Reporter 2.

BASIC FUNCTION

Identify and craft news stories for an assigned news beat.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Reporting to news editor and working on assigned news beat, identify and craft deeply reported audio and digital stories. Contribute news reports to daily newscasts and drivetimes. Appear on KUOW talk shows and at live events to present and discuss reporting. Work closely with editors and content producers in creating plans that articulate a vision and strategy for coverage of a beat. Use broadcast software to record and edit stories.

TYPICAL WORK

Typical working title is “Reporter;”

Identify and craft deeply reported audio and digital stories on a beat;

Produce scoops on a beat;

Contribute news reports to daily newscasts and drivetimes;

Appear on KUOW talk shows and at live events to present and discuss reporting;

Actively engage with social media and source networks as a reporting and distribution tool;

Meet daily filing schedule that may require occasional evening and weekend work;

Work closely with editors and content producers in creating plans that articulate a vision and strategy for coverage of a beat; and

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and three years of professional broadcast journalism experience including specific position requirements relating to news writing, radio production and audio editing; or equivalent combination of education/experience.
