CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Within University of Washington Press (UW Press), perform specialized work related to the editing, design, production, marketing, and sales of titles published by UW Press. Book projects range in complexity from standard scholarly monographs to highly illustrated art history, visual culture, and regional trade titles; key regional reference works; translations of important literary works; and books about social justice topics written by scholar-activists and for course use.
BASIC FUNCTION
Serve as a design assistant.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Perform design assistance:
Under the general direction of the Art Director, create marketing and development materials, seasonal and subject catalogs, book covers and interiors, and updated web pages for the UW Press website. Meet the design needs of the UW Press while upholding UWP branding and established design and cultural sensitivity standards and maintaining book production schedules.
TYPICAL WORK
Prepare marketing and development materials, including two seasonal catalogs per year, tip sheets, print direct mail pieces, PowerPoint decks, invitations, email banners, print and digital ads, and signage.
Perform cover design and layout, including design and layout of back covers, conversion of existing jackets to paperback covers, and image research in support of Art Director’s cover design work (with sensitivity to cultural context). Occasionally design front covers.
Provide website support, including design of custom banners and pages; provide rebranding support, including updating press-branded materials.
Perform image review, analysis, and preparation (including improvements, color adjustment, and file conversion) for complex art programs of new books; and
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in visual arts, graphic design, humanities, or social science and 1 year of professional production experience with books or printed materials
OR
Equivalent combination of education and experience.
CIVIL SERVICE EXEMPTION
Graphic Arts and Publications.
