CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Within University of Washington Press (UW Press), perform specialized work related to the editing, design, production, marketing, and sales of titles published by UW Press. Book projects range in complexity from standard scholarly monographs to highly illustrated art history, visual culture, and regional trade titles; key regional reference works; translations of important literary works; and books about social justice topics written by scholar-activists and for course use.

BASIC FUNCTION

Serve as a reprints coordinator and production assistant.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Perform reprints coordinator and production assistance, as follows:

Under the general direction of the Editorial, Design, and Production Director (EDP Director) or EDP Manager, coordinate digital short-run and on-demand printing of new titles and reprinting of backlist titles on multiple platforms; manage e-book conversion of frontlist and backlist titles; maintain UW Press digital archive; work with cover mechanicals; perform image evaluation for new books; and prepare marketing and development materials as needed.

TYPICAL WORK

REPRINT COORDINATION/PRODUCTION ASSISTANCE

Coordinate reprints; maintain files of text reprint corrections; research and determine availability and usability of backlist files; retrieve files, make corrections to application files, and forward revised pages to EDP Manager or senior project editor for review; convert, adjust, or re-create cover files; order and track digital short-run reprints; activate true print-on-demand (POD) status as instructed; and traffic revised files to printer for offset reprinting.

Manage conversion to e-book format of all titles, working closely with Editorial and Grants/Digital Projects staff to order timely conversions of frontlist and select backlist titles; upload final files for conversion upon approval of printer proofs; track and troubleshoot the conversion process; approve invoices; make corrections to existing e-books as needed; and upload final e-book files and alert Marketing and Sales Department when files are ready for distribution.

Create barcodes and create or procure printer templates for cover and jacket mechanicals; convert, adjust, or re-create mechanicals for reprints or different platforms; and convert existing jackets to paperback covers.

Coordinate file delivery to printers and receipt and trafficking of printer proofs; track schedules closely and update title management system (AllBooks) with latest dates; order digital short-run printings for frontlist books; upload files to Core Source and troubleshoot file problems.

Maintain and optimize UW Press digital archive; save final page and component files for all new and changed reprint titles; purge obsolete files to prevent mistakes and for quick and accurate retrieval of latest version.

Review image files for incoming book projects; perform digital art analysis and prepare art programs of select new books.

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in visual arts, graphic design, humanities, or social science and 1 year of professional production or design experience with books or printed materials

OR

Equivalent combination of education and experience.

CIVIL SERVICE EXEMPTION

Graphic Arts and Publications.
