CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

As a staff member of University of Washington Press (UW Press), solicit grants and manage grant-funded initiatives including digital and open access projects. This is a stand-alone job class.

BASIC FUNCTION

Research and pursue grant opportunities to further the funding goals of UW Press. Develop the press’s capacity to publish new forms of scholarship, including digital and open access work.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Reporting to the Director of UW Press, plan, manage, and direct UW Press’s efforts to secure grants from organizations, foundations, and corporations in support of UW Press and its publishing program. Write grant proposals and reports on implementation for individual books and multi-year, multi-partner grants and projects.

Research, propose, and develop new initiatives in digital and open access publishing, and manage implementation of approved projects.

Activities in this position involve extensive direct contact with the diverse internal and external audiences of UW Press, including authors, alumni, friends, major donors, faculty, staff, and representatives of scholarly societies, universities, foundations, and corporations.

TYPICAL WORK

Identify grant opportunities and write applications for grants and other sources of funding to support the press and its publishing program;

Prepare narrative and financial reports on project implementation;

Engage in extensive direct contact with the diverse internal and external audiences of UW Press, including authors, alumni, friends, major donors, faculty, staff, volunteers, and representatives of organizations, foundations, and corporations;

Track applications, results, conditions, and other relevant information in the press-wide database and other tracking and budgeting tools, and in university systems such as Advance and SAGE;

Coordinate with press staff to ensure that grant conditions are met;

Provide materials, information, and advice to UW Libraries’ advancement team on press goals, priorities, history, impact, forthcoming titles, and other matters to inform their efforts to secure support from individual donors;

Advise Libraries’ advancement team on annual appeal and other fundraising campaigns;

Research new scholarly publishing initiatives, models, and platforms to support open and emerging forms of scholarship;

Propose press initiatives around open and emerging forms of scholarship and manage approved initiatives, in consultation and collaboration with press director and members of press management team;

Serve as liaison with partners involved in digital initiatives in the UW Libraries and at other institutions, and represent the press at planning and implementation meetings;

Serve as digital projects editor for complex digital publications and digital components of print publications;

As a member of the press’s management team, provide input on publishing decisions and strategic directions;

Supervise the work of staff and/or student assistants;

Report progress toward goals to UW Press Director and in the case of fundraising goals, the UW Libraries Director for Advancement; and

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree in humanities, social sciences, or a related discipline and 4 years of experience in scholarly publishing

Equivalent combination of education and experience.
