BASIC FUNCTION

Supervise total operation and maintenance of major sports or recreational activities equipment room; responsible for fittings, adjusting, modification, maintenance, repair, requisitioning, receipt issuance, and accountability of athletic garments and equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class are distinguished by total responsibility for acquisition, upkeep and maintenance of all athletic equipment within a large, centralized recreational facility, or for major sports programs such as football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, gymnastics, track and field, skiing, rowing, la crosse, golf, soccer, volleyball, tennis, band, cheer, etc. Responsible for the skilled selection and fitting of athletic equipment for prevention of injury to the athlete. Supervise and participate in the requisition, receiving, storing, issuing, testing, fitting, maintenance, repair, and surveying of sports uniforms, equipment, and accessories. Supervise the operation of equipment rooms, locker rooms, and laundry facilities.

TYPICAL WORK

Select, train, supervise, and schedule staff and student-employees in total sports program; provide skilled instruction on use and application of various athletic equipment;

Determine annual athletic equipment needs; review requirements with directors/head coaches and assist in budget requests;

Maintain required health, safety, and security practices in locker room and games areas;

Utilize electronic databases and programs to direct and maintain inventories, identify shortages and submit requisitions for new or replacement athletic equipment and protective garments. Determine purchasing methodology, specifications, quantities, product availability and supply sources; maintain vendor relationships. Participate in evaluating new technologies in sports equipment. Monitor expenses to adhere to established budgets.

Supervise fittings and fit uniforms and protective equipment; fit shoes, making adjustments; custom fit and alter shoulder pads to individual body structure; fit helmets to size and shape of the head to aid the prevention of injury to athletes; modify equipment for previously injured athletes; work directly with Athletic training room regarding footwear issues or protective equipment as needed; interpret and apply various rules and regulations.

Assist coaches and recreation supervisors in establishing amounts, types, and quality of required athletic equipment for academic year; may travel with teams post-season and has personnel present for all home events (including weekends and evenings) to provide athletic equipment and services;

Make reports of inventory, staff activities, games operations, and recommended policy changes;

Supervise and participate in inspection of uniforms and accessories for wear and damage; sew and mend, restitch shoes, replace cleats, re-rivet helmets, replace cups and epaulets on shoulder pads, restitch gym mats and make other repairs to equipment and uniforms; ensure all equipment is safe and defect free.

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

College degree in Physical Education;

OR

three years of full-time experience in athletic equipment room operations.
