CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Provide customer service in a retail and/or service operation.
BASIC FUNCTION
Perform retail selling, cash register operation, inventory stocking and clerical work.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
First level class of series. Under general supervision, assist customers in merchandise selection and purchase; operate cash registers in retail and/or service operation.
TYPICAL WORK
Assist customers in locating, selecting and purchasing various retail items such as text books, drafting equipment, art supplies, clothing items, souvenirs, etc.;
Open shipping cases and stock shelves and display stands;
Operate cash registers; receive cash; make change; quote prices; cash checks as authorized; process and handle charge sales;
Participate in physical inventories; prepare and maintain inventory records; assist in receiving stock;
Clean shelves, fixtures, and furnishings; maintain retail stock in attractive and orderly arrays;
May prepare and type invoices and order requisitions for stock replacement; may type routine correspondence and memoranda, occupational-level skill not required;
May open and close register daily;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED certificate;
OR
six months of experience in retail selling, cash register operation, and/or general clerical work.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
