BASIC FUNCTION

As a member of the health care team, provide professional spiritual care/spiritual health services.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Provide spiritual care and wellbeing services to patients, their caregivers, and staff/faculty; and exercise independent decision-making authority and expertise specific to assigned area of practice.

TYPICAL WORK

As part of a multidisciplinary team, provide emotional and spiritual support and interventions to address the spiritual and existential distress of patients and families;
Provide specialty consultation to health care staff/faculty regarding psychosocial and spiritually focused aspects of client/patient care;
Act as Spiritual Care Provider for the institution; prepare, create, and conduct rituals including remembrance gatherings for staff; lead formal and informal debriefs for staff (post code, grief support, moral distress support, and traumatic events);

Offer support and consultation to the spiritual/religious/existential needs of persons of all backgrounds;

Conduct group sessions, seminars, and individual counseling;

Participate in the continuing education of staff/faculty in the area of spiritual care and well-being;

Participate in formal and informal teaching of health care professionals, health sciences students, and the general community;

Arrange for appropriate spiritual community leaders as requested by patients/caregivers.

Make timely referrals to hospital and community agencies including those required by any mandatory reporting laws such as child and vulnerable adult abuse;

Maintain appropriate documentation;

May participate in health sciences teaching activities, research studies, and projects;

May participate in or chair departmental program development activities or committees;

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Four units in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) spiritual care training program and/or employment experience
AND
Master of Divinity or equivalent graduate degree from an accredited seminary or graduate school

AND

Currently ordained, commissioned, certified, or otherwise endorsed for chaplaincy by, and in good standing with a nationally recognized religious, humanist, interfaith body

AND

Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) within 2 years of hire date.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certifications. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.
