BASIC FUNCTION

Plan, lay out, design and prepare original visual presentations; interpret, edit and write copy from complex scientific information for visual presentation and use in medical, dental and bio-scientific disciplines.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Single class – no series. Under general direction, render complex biomedical concepts or images into illustrations or presentations designed to explain underlying principles or relationships; research and/or utilize specialized knowledge of nomenclature, basic theories, structures and functions typical of medical, dental or bio-scientific fields.

TYPICAL WORK

Advise scientists and others in the medical, dental and bio-scientific fields regarding the effective design and use of visual materials;

Create graphic presentation of objects, procedures and ideas using appropriate media such as line or continuous tone in black and white or color using pencil, wash water color, oil color, ink, etc.;

Prepare original art work for text books, scientific publications, exhibits, displays, brochures, slides, self-teaching cassettes, closed circuit and public information television and motion pictures;

Design and coordinate production of three dimensional displays;

Maintain and update stocks and supplies; recommend the purchase of graphic and audio-visual equipment;

May direct the work of assigned personnel;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor’s Degree in art or science AND four years of experience in medical or scientific illustration OR an equivalent combination of experience and training. A Master’s Degree in medical illustration may be substituted for two years of the required work experience.
