DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general direction, perform highly complex troubleshooting, maintenance, construction, and repair activities such as analyzing an entire system of elements to diagnose problems on large computer and/or data communication network systems or complex computer-integrated mechanical devices. Install major computer equipment or complex networks. Design and fabricate complex computer and/or data network equipment. Complete electronic/electrical construction documentation for large projects.
TYPICAL WORK
Diagnose highly complex computer system malfunctions or failures on large computer and/or wide area data communication network systems such as an ethernet or other broadband/baseband network connecting a large number of terminals, work stations, peripherals, mainframes or clusters of minicomputers;
Diagnose by performing such activities as analyzing addressing schemes, testing separate protocols and considering separate wiring configurations to isolate, diagnose and correct malfunctions; analyzing software and firmware operation of associated data switches and communication controllers to troubleshoot circuits; diagnosing highly complex computer-integrated mechanical or electro-mechanical device malfunctions such as embossing machines, computer-integrated gas chromatographs and/or microprocessor development systems; make adjustments, corrections, repair and replace parts to component level;
Plan, coordinate, and perform all maintenance activities on a large computer system and/or data communication network; perform maintenance in place of a maintenance contract or for which no contracts are available; maintain and modify electrical power conversion and distribution systems; ensure that equipment is at current rev levels; develop and use diagnostic software and/or digital logic devices as needed to locate malfunction(s); coordinate with software technicians and vendor representatives in making necessary changes;
Design and fabricate specialized interfaces, controls, or data communication equipment when interfacing complex computer equipment and/or wide-area networks such as fiber optic systems to existing data communication networks;
Confer with professional and technical personnel on design concept, equipment requirements and limitations when fabricating special purpose computer and/or data communication equipment; complete electronic/electrical construction documentation for large projects.
Install (or direct the installation of) major units of computer and/or computer network systems such as wide area network systems; front-end processors, input/output controllers; construct local data circuit networks; and design and fabricate data network equipment; confer with manufacturers to determine required changes when newly released design changes are necessary;
Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs; perform preventive maintenance on a variety of computer and/or data communication hardware components; coordinate efforts with systems programmers and/or vendor representatives;
Update computer maintenance manuals; ensure that test equipment is calibrated and operating properly;
Develop or oversee the development and maintenance of an inventory of spare parts and supplies, ensure that test equipment is available, operational, and calibrated;
Provide computer operations staff with information on maintenance schedules, limitations on computer availability, or projected computer down time.
May train and/or direct the work of others in computer and data communications equipment maintenance, installation, construction or documentation activities;
Perform related duties as required.
