CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Perform telecommunications systems support work by troubleshooting, testing, installing, maintaining, and supporting telecommunications software and hardware for communications systems and users.

This series is intended to describe positions that have primary responsibility for providing telecommunications systems support in a medical center environment.

BASIC FUNCTION

Install, maintain and repair communications equipment, cable and wire in a medical center environment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, in a medical center environment perform entry-level, routine troubleshooting, maintenance, repair and installation of communications equipment, cable and wire such as replacing boards and diagnosing and correcting hardware problems

TYPICAL WORK

Install, maintain, program and repair various telecommunications, video, and data network wiring systems including single-line and multiple-line telephones, intercom systems, overhead paging systems, radio pagers, voicemail, televisions, and other communication systems;

Prioritize work orders to meet established completion dates;

Use electronic test equipment and tools to perform mechanical, electro-mechanical, or electronic repairs; follow vendor manuals, schematics and wiring diagrams, specifications, or instructions from supervisor to make repairs to board or component level; calibrate and/or test for proper operation;

Assist in the installation of new equipment and/or systems; prepare and maintain documentation of network changes;

Fabricate cables for use in interfacing telecommunications equipment;

Update maintenance manuals;

Confer with customers and supervisor to determine equipment problems and to fulfill services requirements;

Coordinate with wiring and cable installation vendors for access and scheduling; provide wire and materials as required; verify quality control to established standards of completed jobs; advise supervisor of deficiencies;

Coordinate with internal service providers in implementing site alterations for cable installation; review floor plans for accuracy and report corrections to supervisor;

Facilitate the bid process by providing walk-through assistance and information to contractors responding to RFQ and RFP requests;

Wreck-out antiquated wire systems and replace with current standard wire; wreck-out abandoned wire in project areas prior to notice to proceed on construction, remodels and projects;

Maintain adequate inventory of UTP wire and materials;

May direct the work of others;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of experience/training in telecommunications technology or related field.

OR

equivalent education/experience.
