BASIC FUNCTION
Prepare specimens for laboratory testing or set up specimens for laboratory testing as well as other laboratory work which supports the operation of a clinical laboratory.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general supervision, prepare/set up specimens for laboratory tests and other laboratory work in support of technologists, faculty and students.
TYPICAL WORK
Set up bacterial, fungal and viral cultures; set up and monitor herpes cultures; maintain stock cultures; read gram stains; make and stain blood smears;
Prepare reagents, chemical solutions, culture media or cell cultures according to established procedures;
Operate laboratory equipment such as electronic balances, microscopes, spectrophotometers, pH meters, autoclaves, metering pumps and centrifuges;
Participate in training students and new employees
Perform laboratory specimen processing consisting of receiving, identifying, assigning accession numbers, sorting, preparation and internal laboratory distribution of blood, urine, and other biological specimens;
Respond to inquiries concerning patient lab values, reference ranges, specimen requirements, procedures, time required for tests, and preparation of specimens to outside labs for analysis;
Perform data processing and clerical tasks;
Perform the work of a Clinical Laboratory Assistant;
May perform phlebotomy on patients to obtain laboratory samples;
May perform waived testing such as glucose or urine dip sticks; and
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school graduation or equivalent AND one year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience
OR
Completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
OR
equivalent education/experience.
