BASIC FUNCTION
Perform professional work in support of scientific research; perform a variety of complex investigative procedures; modify procedures and interpret results.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general supervision, assist in determining most suitable methods to be used in research; independently perform scientific investigative procedures requiring application of professional judgment; interpret results and determine whether they are consistent with experimental goals; review literature; modify experimental procedure or technique to obtain optimal experimental results; assist in the assembly, organization and interpretation of data.
TYPICAL WORK
Conduct literature reviews to assist in determining most suitable methods to be used in research;
Identify methodological problems in research protocol and implement modifications to optimize experimental results;
Prepare and present written or oral progress reports concerning studies including assembly, organization, and interpretation of data;
Coordinate specialized research functions such as establishing and maintaining cultures for which methodology is not yet developed;
Perform statistical analyses of data;
Perform animal surgery or microsurgery;
Perform clinical procedures on animals such as drug infusion, implantation of indwelling catheters, and stress-balance testing;
Prepare specifications for equipment and supplies needed in support of research for scientific studies;
May write computer programs and/or manage research data base;
May direct the work of Research Technologist I’s and other assigned laboratory personnel;
May coordinate human subjects documentation;
Perform the duties of Research Technologist I;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate field of technology or science, PLUS one year of research experience equivalent to Research Technologist I OR one year of full-time post-baccalaureate college in an appropriate field of science or technology. Professional level experience may be substituted, year-for-year, for the formal academic degree.
The announcement of position vacancy (recruiting bulletin) may specify course work or experience within a specific discipline if determined necessary by the personnel officer.
Training or experience within a specific discipline will be required to meet the unique requirements of individual positions.
