CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Perform animal care duties; provide care for animals and animal facilities.
BASIC FUNCTION
Supervise animal facility support staff, including Animal Technician Supervisor(s), involved in the performance of duties associated with a highly specialized animal facility and assist in the development of program policies and budgets. Act as liaison between the program and outside organizations. Interview and recommend selection of applicants, train new employees, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action.
Oversees the daily operation of a highly complex animal facility.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, train new employees, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action.
Under general direction, perform work using knowledge and experience specific to the animal facility. Assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating policies; devise and implement new procedures; develop information to support budgetary requests and project income and expenditures. Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
TYPICAL WORK
Perform duties of Animal Technician Supervisor;
Supervise, coach, train and mentor all levels of Animal Technicians including Animal Technician Supervisors; may supervise other animal facility support staff;
Assign work schedules and task assignments, assign workloads and ensure adequate staffing to meet operational goals interview and recommend selection of applicants, train new employees, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action;
Establish and supervise work priorities;
Manage and evaluate employee performance; provide regular feedback to employees and conduct performance evaluations;
Provide information to departmental management team(s) regarding personnel needs and develop plans for developing workforce to ensure an appropriate level of support and compliance;
Ensure accurate records are kept and maintained for personnel, animals, equipment, and services in assigned facility/facilities;
Coordinate equipment maintenance, certifications, repairs, or replacements; supervise and coordinate preventative maintenance program activities for all animal equipment in assigned facility;
Participate in the development and implementation of strategies for assigning space to researchers to ensure efficient and effective use of animal facility space;
Participate in the development and implementation of quality control programs for operation of the facility and animal husbandry needs;
Review and ensure accuracy of billing for services and supplies provided within assigned facility;
Advise, assist and communicate with research staff regarding animal experimental needs; implement or oversee implementation of procedures or equipment requirements to assure that research needs are met;
Participate in regulatory inspections and accreditation site visits; respond to and ensure resolution of issues identified during facility inspections or reviews.
Establish and maintain a culture of safety and emergency preparedness through facility staff education and awareness of responsibilities in coordination with Occupational Health Program components;
Provide off-hour responses to emergency husbandry issues and alarms on a rotational basis; and
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification or AALAS Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) certification,
AND
High school graduation or equivalent AND a minimum of three years of experience working in an animal research environment, two years of which must be at an Animal Technician Supervisor level, or equivalent.
OR
Two years of college with major study in animal or life science or similar discipline AND a minimum of two years of experience working in an animal research environment, to include one year which must be at an Animal Technician Supervisor level or equivalent,
OR
Bachelor’s Degree with major study in animal or life science or similar discipline and one year of experience in an animal research environment at an Animal Technician Supervisor level or equivalent.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
