CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Perform animal care duties; provide care for animals and animal facilities.
BASIC FUNCTION
Independently perform routine husbandry tasks involved in the care and feeding of animals, and maintenance of animal facilities
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Perform basic preventive animal health maintenance duties and select administrative functions. Independently perform routine and advanced animal care duties.
TYPICAL WORK
Perform duties of Animal Technician 1;
Restrain animals for examination or injection; collect urine and/or fecal samples as directed;
Perform preventive animal health care duties;
Collect and evaluate water and environmental samples to record water quality, and support animal health and sanitation efficacy testing;
Assist in the installation and routine maintenance of caging systems and other non-fixed facility equipment;
Document equipment maintenance and repairs in accordance with facility guidelines;
Perform delegated administrative functions in support of animal facility management and operations;
May administer oral or topical medications;
May collect basic examination information such as temperature, pulse, respiration, weight; record as needed;
May assist in clinical or research experiment activities;
May assist in training and directing the work of new and lower level animal technicians and research technicians;
May euthanize laboratory animals;
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification.
One year of experience as an Animal Technician 1 or equivalent.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
