CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Diagnose malfunctions, maintain, repair, install, test, develop and fabricate patient care, life support, and clinical laboratory equipment and apparatus for use in health care facilities and other patient care related areas. Provide technical support to health care professionals, clinicians, and technologists involved in patient care. Repair malfunctioning patient care life support equipment during emergent situations.

This series is distinguished from the Media Maintenance, Computer Maintenance, and Electronic Technician series by working in a health care facility on patient care, life support, and clinical laboratory equipment and apparatus for use in patient diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and life support.

BASIC FUNCTION

Perform journey-level work in troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, installing, constructing and testing all electronic/mechanical/hydraulic equipment, apparatus, and systems used in a health care facility. Work from schematic diagrams, blueprints, service documentation, federal, state and local electrical and fire safety codes, and from verbal instructions.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, independently perform a variety of troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, construction, installation, assembly, and testing activities on all electronic/mechanical/hydraulic patient care, life support, surgical services, and clinical laboratory equipment varying from the routine test, repair and maintenance of equipment to complex instrumentation and systems.

This class is distinguished from the Biomedical Electronics Technician 1 by the minimal supervision the incumbents require, the responsibility for maintaining equipment for life support, recommending process improvements, and mentoring other technicians.

TYPICAL WORK

Troubleshoot, repair, maintain and calibrate all electronic/mechanical/hydraulic patient care, life support, surgical services, and clinical laboratory equipment, apparatus or systems such as but not limited to cardiac monitors, bed side patient monitoring systems, electrosurgical unit (ESU), blood-gas analyzers, multi-chemistry analyzers, surgical lasers, general/basic imaging equipment (portable X-ray machines), surgical robots, and infusion devices;

Use electronic test equipment such as digital multi-meters, safety and logic analyzers, and other specialized test equipment at the journey-level to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions to system, board, or component level; use computer-aided diagnostic software and/or digital logic devices to locate malfunction(s);

Perform mechanical, electro-mechanical, or electronic repair(s); perform electronic repairs to system, board, or component level; calibrate and/or test for proper operation;

Perform preventive maintenance on patient care and clinical laboratory equipment; test, diagnose, adjust, and calibrate to local, state, and national electrical and fire safety codes; advise healthcare professionals and administrators on compliance of equipment with fire and safety codes; and modify equipment to satisfy the requirements;

Review outcome of preventive maintenance actions and make recommendations for improvements to processes or procedures;

Repair malfunctioning patient care life support equipment;

Construct standard and custom-designed electrical circuits, mechanisms or assemblies designed by others for use in patient care or clinical laboratory areas of a health care facility; use hand and power tools such as drill presses, grinders, band saws, hand drills, soldering equipment, etc. to layout, fabricate, and test circuit(s); responsible for board production and population, chassis construction and front panel fabrication;

Evaluate medical equipment involved in unusual incidents and prepare reports and documentation;

Develop inventory lists and orders, stock and store electronic components such as transistors, integrated circuits, resistors, capacitors, as well as manufacturer specific parts for patient care and/or clinical laboratory equipment such as circuit boards, module assemblies, etc.;

Provide mentorship to other technicians;

Monitor and evaluate third-party repairs;

Confer with faculty, staff, clients, vendors, students, and/or supervisors in determining equipment problems or fulfilling service requirements;

May direct the work of others;

May perform limited maintenance or repair on computers;

May develop methods and procedures for proper operation of electronic equipment;

Perform the work of a Biomedical Equipment Technician 1; and

Perform other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An Associate’s Degree in Electronics, Biomedical Equipment Technology or related field, two years of experience in the repair and maintenance of medical equipment in the hospital setting, and computing and networking knowledge or experience
