BASIC FUNCTION

Assist the Production Manager in administering a book production unit and establish design, format, and layouts for new books and other published materials.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, assist in the administration of a book production unit. Design new books, coordinate production of reprints, paperbacks and other published materials.

TYPICAL WORK

Establish specifications for new books; select typeface, paper, and binding materials; size illustrations and prepare layouts for printer; check gallery and page proofs;

Analyze and accept bids for book manufacture; prepare cost analysis for projects; approve expenditures;

Coordinate production of reprints and first-time paperback editions; select type for any changes; prepare new pages where necessary;

Maintain schedule and specifications for all active editorial/production projects; provide status and schedule information to other departments, suppliers, printers, and binders; prepare monthly status reports; assure adherence to schedule;

Review, correct, and reorder printed material such as letterhead, envelopes, and forms; prepare specifications; select illustrations; prepare camera ready mechanicals;

Coordinate with compositors, printers, and binders; assure adherence to production schedules and quality standards;

Coordinate shipping of books and other published materials distributed but not produced by the press;

Prepare requisitions and correspondence; order supplies; maintain files; review and approve production invoices;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree OR three years of work experience related to the design and fabrication of books OR equivalent experience/education.
