BASIC FUNCTION

Supervise Coding Specialists and perform coding functions; coordinate activities of the department with other departments and outside agencies. Serve as expert resource to other departments and services in the areas current coding, billing and regulatory guidelines.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

With delegated authority, participate in the interview process for Coding Specialists, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action. Assist in the development of staff competencies and/or performance standards. Ensure successful day to day operations of the department.

TYPICAL WORK

Define and interpret applicable rules, procedures and regulations for employees and customers; resolve problems between departmental staff and customers, both internal and external;

Develop and implement policies and procedures, forms, work methods, standards and schedules to be followed by department staff; establish job priorities and coordinate work flow;

Analyze and monitor clinical documentation to assure the appropriate assignment of International Classifications of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding Systems (HCPCS) and/or Diagnostic Related Group (DRG) codes to insure data integrity and optimal reimbursement;

Monitor and review daily departmental productivity reports; research variances in coder production;

Identify performance deficiencies; evaluate staff performance and recommend training opportunities; recommend and participate in disciplinary actions and action plan monitoring through resolution;

Respond to inquiries regarding coding questions or concerns;

Coordinate department activities with other departments/services;

Assist in the development, review, revision and implementation of policies, procedures, departmental job aides and internal coding manuals;

Plan and coordinate monthly team section meetings;

Assist in the development, preparation and maintenance of reports regarding operational activities for use in budgeting, planning, coordinating, evaluating, and supervising;

Provide Coding leadership in organization committee and/or meeting functions;

Assist in interviewing and selection of new staff;

Assist with the development and training of staff;

May perform special projects;

Perform related duties, as required;

May perform the work of lower level classifications of the Coding Specialist series.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent

AND

Certified as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist – Physician Based (CCS-P), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder (CIRCC), Radiology Certified Coder (RCC) or Radiation Oncology Certified Coder (ROCC).

AND

Four years coding experience or equivalent education/experience

AND

Two years lead or supervisory experience.

CLASSIFICATION HISTORY

09/01/2017: New Classification: Coding Specialist series effective 09/01/2017 as agreed to with SEIU 925. New series incorporates the work previously performed in the Clinical Data Specialist series.
