BASIC FUNCTION
Exercise primary operational responsibility for a computer system or data communications network.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Senior-level class of series. Exercise operational responsibility for a computer system or data communications network. Under general direction, perform complex technical tasks using extensive knowledge of and experience with departmental standards and procedures such as switching (local and network components) and altering internal software configurations.
TYPICAL WORK
Operate computers, computer peripheral and computer-related equipment;
Perform complex technical tasks related to data communication such as locating, defining and correcting data communication network problems;
Identify operating system malfunctions, determine and implement corrective action by switching alternative equipment into circuits, alter internal software configurations;
Work with programmers during testing and checkout of new or modified computer system programs;
Coordinate use of off-site computer facilities;
May maintain operations or peripheral equipment processing schedules and suggest methods to improve the scheduling process;
May interface with users in the set-up, scheduling, production and verification of user’s production jobs;
May perform the duties of Computer Operator II;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
One year of full-time experience as a Computer Operator II, or equivalent.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
