CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Serves as an applications specialist within an information services organization operating in a complex heterogeneous computing environment. Provides application support services to multiple institutions/departments/units. Application support services include defining computing needs, writing user documentation, preparing and conducting training programs, providing project control, and planning for and delivery of computing applications and technologies.

This series differs from other computer related series in that the primary function is to work directly with clients in defining application needs, designing system specifications, and applying various types of information systems to meet client/user needs. Positions in this series work independently or as a team member, and/or direct the work of systems analyst/programmers and/or other technical staff.

This series does not provide the technical design or programming functions necessary for complete system development and implementation AND does not perform hardware repair and maintenance as a primary duty.

BASIC FUNCTION

Provide application assistance to clients in the use of complex administrative or instructional/courseware computing systems. Troubleshoot the resolution of routine computing problems, conduct training courses and write and/or update support documentation. Assist clients and/or analysts in defining specifications for information systems requirements.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision., consult with and provide applications support to users of complex administrative and/or academic application systems such as student records management, financial aid, payroll, and multi-media or visual imaging. Conduct training on new or revised software applications and updates; write and/or update support documentation.

TYPICAL WORK

Provide information to potential or active users of the information services organization on the capabilities and limitations of available hardware and software systems;

Consult with and assist users of complex academic and/or administrative applications such as student records management, financial aid, payroll, computer aided instruction systems, geographical/topological information systems, simulation, and bulletin board systems;

Assist clients/users in determining processing requirements and operational procedures;

Test and evaluate hardware and software products and assist in evaluating hardware/software product standards;

Coordinate computing activities with user departments in utilization of integrated application systems which cross departmental boundaries;

Provide technical support in resolving hardware and software problems;

Assist in implementing and maintaining local network computerized systems;

Assist in the definition and development of user documentation standards and documentation library maintenance;

May direct the work of others;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of college coursework in computer science or a related field AND two years of experience in design, development, or maintenance and support of software systems.

OR
a Bachelor’s Degree in a job related area

OR
equivalent education/experience.
