DEFINITION

Perform skilled work in the inspection, testing, servicing, and maintenance of mechanical, pneumatic, electronic, and electrical controls for heating, air-conditioning, and related equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Work requires special skills in instrument and control maintenance, and the ability to work independently with little supervision.

TYPICAL WORK

Work involves installation, modification, trouble diagnosis, testing, repair, calibration and operation of a variety of mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic equipment and apparatus used in heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems;

Lay out, fabricate, and install mechanical pneumatic electrical and electronic temperature and humidity controls for heating and ventilation systems; may design systems;

Use such tools as drill presses, grinders, band saws, hand drills, soldering guns, small hand tools and specialized apparatus;

May trouble-shoot and repair fire alarm systems as assigned;

Trouble-shoot and repair central supervisory control system components;

Order and stock temperature controls, valves, and related parts for repair and installation of electrical, mechanical, electronic and pneumatic control systems;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Completion of a four-year approved institution course as a Control Technician Trainee; OR four years of applicable experience in installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical and pneumatic control systems. Vocational or trade school training in control mechanisms may be substituted, year-for-year, for work experience up to a maximum of two years.
