CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Provide nutritional services directly to patients and nursing units.

BASIC FUNCTION

Maintain the patient nutritional care system which includes writing menus in accordance to diet prescription and processing menus for meals.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, write or check patient menus; distribute, pick up, and tally menus; prepare food production worksheets; maintain record of patient diet prescriptions.

TYPICAL WORK

Maintain current patient card files by processing diet and meal orders;

Write and/or check patient menus according to established food patterns, food tolerances, and preferences; check patient trays to ensure they match the patient menus;

Respond to verbal and written communications regarding patient nutritional care;

Calculate nutrient intake with computer;

Label, deliver and pick up patient menus;

Tally patient menus and prepare food production worksheets;

Distribute nutritional care information to patients;

Determine and report patient census to food production area;

Maintain supply inventory;

Act as department receptionist;

Perform the work of Dietary Unit Aides;

May contact on-call personnel for relief work;

May prepare late trays for patients;

May assist in orienting and training new staff; and

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of, or eligible to obtain a Washington State Food Worker Card within two weeks of employment, high school graduation or GED, and one year of experience as a Dietary Unit Aide in a health care facility or equivalent. One year of additional experience may substitute for the educational requirement.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
