CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Following requirements and specifications from engineers or scientists, perform engineering technician work designing, developing, fabricating, modifying, assembling and repairing various mechanical, electro-mechanical, agricultural, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electronic instruments, apparatus and equipment within an engineering, scientific, or instructional application.

This series is distinguished from the Electronics Technician series by spending a majority of time in the design, development, and fabrication of specialized engineering, scientific, or instructional instruments, apparatus and equipment.

This series is distinguished from the Computer Maintenance Technician series by maintaining and/or repairing computer or other microprocessor-controlled integrated digital equipment which is integrated or interfaced with specialized engineering, scientific, or instructional instruments, apparatus and equipment.

BASIC FUNCTION

Assist in the design and development, and perform skilled and precision work constructing, installing, calibrating, and testing instruments, apparatus, and equipment within a scientific, instructional or engineering application.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, independently perform basic engineering technician tasks such as: assisting in the design and development of apparatus; performing skilled, precision machine tool work constructing apparatus; modifying existing equipment for specific requirements; assisting investigators set up experiments and acquire data.

TYPICAL WORK

Assist in the development and design of apparatus as set forth by the engineer or scientist in sketches, oral instructions, blueprints, or CAD programs;

Perform skilled and precision work on the layout, construction and/or assembly of instruments and equipment such as strain gauge holders, amplifiers, calibrators, notch filters, transducers; generate block diagrams, design circuits and circuit board layout, write software as needed, and select components; build (including enclosure(s)) using electronic, machine and hand tools such as drill presses; soldering guns; gas acetylene, and arc welders; lathes; grinders, etc.;

Evaluate suitability of commercially-manufactured equipment for use in research requirements;

Modify existing equipment such as analog simulators, electrophoresis apparatus, printers, or digital audio processors to meet specialized requirements;

Install equipment and test for proper operation; adjust and calibrate; troubleshoot and repair equipment malfunction(s) to system, board, or component level, using diagnostic software as needed;

Install, level and tram lathes and other machine tools;

Order and maintain an inventory of commonly used tools and supplies;

Assist investigators, engineers and/or scientists in the setup of experiments and the acquisition of data;

Instruct laboratory personnel in the assembly, operation, and maintenance of experimental apparatus and instruments;

May direct the work of others;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Three years of experience as an electronics technician, instrument maker, or engineering assistant. Related course work or technical school training may substitute year-for-year for up to two years of work experience.

OR

One year of experience as an Electronics Technician I OR equivalent education/experience.
