BASIC FUNCTION
Repair and upholster furniture, automobile and truck seats; fabricate seat covers; fabricate, repair, and maintain venetian blinds.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions allocated to this class are distinguished by the requirement for performing skilled work in the fitting, cutting, sewing, and preparation of cloth, plastics, and hardware and installing those components on furniture, walls, windows, and other equipment and facilities. Incumbents must also have skills in working with wood and metals as required to perform the assignment.
TYPICAL WORK
Repair and reupholster furniture by removing old covering, repairing and making new parts as required, retying springs, repadding, cutting, and tailoring new covers, hand sewing where required, and installing the covers by means of tacking, stapling, nailing, gluing, sewing, etc.;
Make and repair window shades by installing rollers, shade cloth, and replacing hardware; make and repair movie screens;
Disassemble damaged or worn furniture; replace broken parts and missing hardware; reassemble furniture; fasten and glue wooden parts;
Remove old finishes by sanding or chemical action; fill cracks and holes and apply new finish;
Repair and replace venetian blinds, shades, awnings, and drapes;
Operate woodworking machines, hand tools, and equipment;
May operate motor vehicle; transport equipment between campus locations as required;
May perform work in other trades;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Journey status as an upholsterer or, three years’ experience as an upholsterer helper, or two years’ experience as an upholsterer helper plus completion of a vocational training course in upholstering.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
