BASIC FUNCTION

Lead and work with Gardeners and other assigned personnel in the development and maintenance of institution grounds, landscapes, athletic fields and/or nursery, or greenhouse.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Regularly assign, instruct and check work of other grounds personnel in landscape construction and grounds maintenance work.

TYPICAL WORK

Perform and lead others in planting, transplanting, mowing, pruning, fertilizing, and irrigating lawns, gardens, shrubs, and trees; coordinate and prepare special landscape projects;

Direct preventive maintenance programs and maintain equipment records;

Apply and instruct in the application of pesticides and herbicides for greenery and plant material;

Maintain adherence to safety policies and procedures;

Develop preliminary cost estimates for maintenance, construction and repair work; inspect grounds projects; read and interpret blueprints;

Use a variety of manual tools and equipment, such as rakes, hand edgers, loppers, pruning shears, shovels, pitchforks, hoes, fertilizer spreaders and pesticide sprayers;

Operate power and motorized equipment such as blowers, light tractors, front-end loaders, lawn mowers, Gang mowers, forklifts, lawn edgers, chain saws, small trucks, back pack blowers, lawn vacuums, and snowblowers;

May assist in interviewing, selecting, training, and evaluating grounds personnel;

May set and operate lawn sprinkler systems;

May mow, maintain and stripe athletic fields;

Perform duties of Gardener II;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Physical ability to do required work AND two years of experience as a Gardener or equivalent work involving grounds maintenance, plant care and landscape construction

OR

Physical ability to do required work AND one year of experience as stated above AND one year of college level training in botany, horticulture, forestry, landscape, irrigation or allied field

OR

equivalent education/experience.
