BASIC FUNCTION
Supervise assigned staff in multiple locations, involved in the performance of duties associated with a highly specialized or technical program(s) and assist in the development of policies, procedures, and budgets; and coordinate activities of the division with other hospital services and outside agencies.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
As a specialized division supervisor and with delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action;
Coordinate specialized division activities in one or more of the following programs within Health Information Management Patient Record and Information Control, Utilization Management, Coding and data collection, Medical Transcription, Tumor Registry.
Under general direction, using knowledge and experience specific to the division, perform supervisory duties. Assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating policies; devise and implement new procedures; develop information to support budgetary requests, project income and expenditures.
TYPICAL WORK
Define and interpret applicable rules, procedures, and regulations for employees and clients; resolve problems between department staff and customers, both internal and external to the medical center;
Develop and implement policies and procedures, forms, work methods and standards, and schedules to be followed by department staff; establish job priorities and coordinate work flow;
Interview, validate references, and select staff; evaluate staff performance and recommend training opportunities; identify performance deficiencies; recommend disciplinary action;
Assist in the preparation of departmental records, including statements of income and expenditures, and summaries of departmental operations;
Assure maintenance of confidentiality and the appropriate control in the release of information;
Provide basic technical equipment training ad knowledge for departmental computer systems for health information documentation via complex integrated computer system across multiple platforms, to include: a network with multiple file servers; multiple personal computers; and other devices; and provide instructions and documentation to employees;
Assist in the management and maintenance of multiple computer systems (hardware and software) including remote date transmission;
Provide clinical experience to students in health information educational programs;
Maintain a variety of statistical materials for response to medical staff and administrator inquiries;
Recommend budget requirements to accommodate staffing, equipment, supply, and facility needs;
Perform the duties of division employees and related duties as required;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Certified as an Accredited Record Technician (ART), or Certified Coding Specialist (CSS), or Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) AND two years of applicable experience in program specialty;
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
