CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Prepare tissue specimens for and/or conduct histological examinations and analyses.
BASIC FUNCTION
Prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis; maintain laboratory equipment and records.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under direct supervision, prepare tissue for microscopic analysis.
TYPICAL WORK
Receive and accession specimens; fix, process and embed tissues; record complete patient information either manually or by computer;
Prepare specimens by frozen section methods;
Cut thin sections of specimens, using various types of microtomes; mount, stain, and label slides;
Perform special stain techniques; assess completed work prior to distribution;
Prepare reagents, dyes and solutions in accordance with standard procedures;
Maintain laboratory equipment, records and files;
Enter to the computer patient and specimen information from pathology requisition slips; verify completed work via the computer;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) approved school
OR
two years of experience in histologic technique.
OR
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
