DEFINITION
Perform routine laboratory and related work under close supervision such as operating laboratory equipment, weighing materials, mixing chemicals, performing simple calculations, performing repetitive tests, and preparing slides.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions assigned to this class are distinguished by the requirement for conducting routine laboratory work in support of scientists, instructors, or students as directed.
TYPICAL WORK
Under specific instruction, make solutions; weigh and dilute drugs;
Dissect and prepare routine biological tissues, assist with surgical procedures as applied to animals;
Set up laboratory apparatus and instruments; read and record instrument data; tabulate data; keep laboratory records;
Perform minor maintenance and repair of laboratory apparatus and instruments;
Assist with library research and clerical work; perform inventories of chemicals, supplies, and equipment;
Order laboratory equipment and supplies; stock laboratory areas as required;
Wash and clean laboratory areas and equipment; assist instructors, research scientists, or students in preparing laboratory equipment, apparatus, and chemicals;
May care for experimental plants;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school graduation or GED certificate; OR one year’s experience as a Laboratory Helper or equivalent.
