BASIC FUNCTION

Supervise employees performing conservation treatment tasks of library materials.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action.

TYPICAL WORK

Determine procedures, priorities, and workflow for unit in accordance with current conservation practice;

Sort and prioritize treatments for incoming materials;

Act as liaison between unit and other units served;

Determine methods of operation to improve efficiency;

Inspect finished work for quality and completeness;

Establish safety procedures;

Prepare and maintain records and reports;

Maintain supply inventories, order supplies and equipment;

Construct bindings in various styles and materials;

Repair binding structures;

Dry clean and repair books and periodical pages, maps, drawings, and other flat paper materials with Japanese tissue and paste;

Construct protective enclosures; mylar encapsulate maps, drawings, posters, and other flat work;

Perform duties of Library Materials Conservation Technician;

May perform reversible treatments to stabilize the condition of rare materials;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School graduation or equivalent AND two years of conservation treatment experience, including one year as a Library Materials Conservation Technician OR equivalent education/experience.
