BASIC FUNCTION
Perform duties required to assist health care professionals in the periprocedural and intraprocedural care of ambulatory patients such as the preparation, assembly, arranging of equipment and supplies used for procedures, and the application of infection control principles in postprocedural cleaning of equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general direction, provides technical support to the care team during procedures,
AND
completes the High-Level Disinfection (HLD) process of medical devices and scopes including quality assurance infection control, precleaning, and storage.
TYPICAL WORK
Perform periprocedural care to patients in partnership with nursing and care team. Includes patient transport, patient positioning, changing, and periprocedural instructions;
Prepare treatment rooms prior to procedures by obtaining and assembling necessary scopes, supplies and medical equipment. Arrange appropriate instruments and equipment for specific procedures;
Assist care team with procedures in clinic, procedural setting, or at patient bedside including ICU, ED, or Radiology. Anticipate and pass instruments and supplies to physicians during procedures;
Maintain infection control throughout procedures;
Assist with the collection of specimens, and prepares specimens for cytology, microbiology, and pathology;
Document supplies used during procedures;
Responsible for the complete process of HLD of medical devices including precleaning, manual cleaning, disinfection, drying, and medical device storage. Assist with clean up after procedures, including the immediate post-procedural cleaning for all scopes and medical equipment per manufacture and HLD policy requirements;
Utilizes universal precautions and follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment, as well as follows all required reprocessing protocols for high level of disinfection;
Performs non-technical maintenance of equipment to prevent malfunctions. Perform methods of quality control for equipment and scopes. Identifies equipment needing preventive maintenance or repair and takes appropriate action. Assures equipment is in good working order; maintains records of equipment sent for repair or ordered as replacement equipment;
Follows transport and storage of scopes and medical equipment as outlined by infection control and HLD processes;
Maintains daily, weekly, and monthly documentation requirements of HLD equipment and washers. Documents in appropriate logs of the cleaning HLD process for medical equipment and scopes;
Supports and upholds established department policies, procedures, objectives, quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control and codes and requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies;
Participates in quality improvement activities; assists in maintaining compliance with accreditation and other internal and external regulatory standards;
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board;
Minimum of 6 months experience;
OR
equivalent education/experience.
LEGAL REQUIREMENT
Must be Washington State Medical Assistant-Certified or achieve this designation during the probationary period. Failure to achieve and/or maintain this designation will result in termination of employment.
