BASIC FUNCTION
At Hall Health Center outpatient clinic on the UW Seattle campus and at University of Washington Medical Center – Montlake (UWMC-ML) ambulatory clinics, supervise Medical Assistants and other assigned staff. Perform duties required to assist health care professionals in the examination and treatment of ambulatory patients such as preparation of patient and environment for treatment, conducting basic laboratory and electrocardiogram tests, care of the patient post-treatments, patient education, and clerical reception functions.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, train new employees, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations, and recommend disciplinary action.
Under general direction, assist health care professionals in the delivery of direct patient care at the Hall Health outpatient clinic and UWMC-ML ambulatory clinics.
TYPICAL WORK
Interview applicants and make recommendations for hire;
Train and orient new employees and/or volunteers to department;
Assign employee schedules, establish plan for emergency staff coverage and act upon leave requests; May manage staff records including timekeeping records, obtain appropriate approvals and submit payroll.
Review and correct the work performed by others for compliance with established procedures; conduct employee performance evaluations; recommend disciplinary actions;
Evaluate and make operational changes in the work unit; monitor patient flow in clinic and assign staffs to assure efficient clinic operations;
Monitor and ensure compliance in preparing patients for examinations, and assisting health care professionals with setting up for procedures; monitor patient’s condition following procedures; recognize emergent/urgent problems and provide basic telephone screening;
If clinical competency is demonstrated and documented, may perform any duty allowed under Washington State RCW 18.360.050, such as, but not limited to, give oral medications as needed;
Ensure the work unit complies with quality assurance programs; coordinates monthly reporting;
Perform duties of Medical Assistants as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Two (2) years of experience as a Medical Assistant
Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board;
OR
Equivalent education/experience.
Legal Requirement
Must be Washington State Medical Assistant-Certified or achieve this designation during the probationary period. Failure to achieve and/or maintain this designation will result in termination of employment.
CLASSIFICATION HISTORY
01/16/2016: New Class; Per a Memorandum of Understanding dated February 19, 2016, this new classification incorporates the work previously performed by a Program Support Supervisor II (17257) at Hall Health Center.
04/01/2022: Expanded Scope; Expanded classification scope to also be used at University of Washington Medical Center – Montlake (UWMC-ML) ambulatory clinics.
