BASIC FUNCTION
Perform and/or provide support for simple and complex (waived and non-waived) laboratory tests according to established procedures.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general direction, perform clinical laboratory tests and/or provide testing support to diagnostic laboratory testing.
TYPICAL WORK
Perform laboratory tests that vary in complexity following established laboratory testing procedures;
Utilize laboratory information system, discipline-specific middleware, as well as institution-based computer systems for test result entry and/or data acquisition;
Follow laboratory procedures and policy for predetermined parameters and quality control criteria to issue laboratory reports;
Perform quality procedures as required, such as but not limited to proficiency testing, temperature control, reagent control, equipment calibrations and function verification tests;
Troubleshoot and eliminate contamination or toxicity problems in cell cultures and media; perform quality control on reagents and viral lysates;
Operate, calibrate, and perform preventive maintenance to laboratory equipment such as but not limited to spectrophotometer, refractometer, conductivity meter, automated chemistry analyzer, bedside monitoring equipment, microscope, electronic cell counter, and coagulation instrumentation;
Assist in troubleshooting and identifying laboratory equipment or instrument problems and escalate to Medical Laboratory Scientists, Medical Technologists, or Leads as needed;
Refer abnormal or unusual findings or problems to Medical Laboratory Scientists, supervisors, or according to laboratory procedures;
May perform phlebotomy and/or arterial punctures;
Act as a resource and participate in training, instruction, and demonstrating routine laboratory techniques to employees, post-doctoral, fellows, residents, and student;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a two-year program in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology AND Technician-level certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization;
OR
equivalent education/experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
