BASIC FUNCTION

Transcribe, proofread and edit complex technical medical reports for a broad range of clinical specialties and departments using digital or machine dictation and word processing equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, independently transcribe, proofread and edit medical reports for a broad range of clinical specialties and/or medical center departments.

TYPICAL WORK

Transcribe complex technical medical reports and correspondence for numerous clinical specialties and departments such as, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Cardiology, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Urology, Endocrinology, Radiation and Medicine Oncology, Psychiatry, Dermatology, and Surgery;

Proofread and edit transcribed materials to assure conformity to departmental and institutional format standards, readability and accuracy in content, grammar, spelling and punctuation;

Code and log each transcribed document by clinical specialty and type of report including patient name, hospital number, and dates dictated and transcribed;

Use and maintain up-to-date medical terminology reference sources; incorporate new terminology;

Respond to questions from physicians, residents, other staff and outside agencies regarding departmental policy and equipment usage;

Maintain confidentiality of all transcribed materials;

Identify possible risk management cases;

Assist other transcriptionists with difficult dictation and research;

May assist in the orientation and training of other transcription and support staff;

May copy and distribute reports;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School graduation or equivalent AND two years of occupational-level medical transcription experience, including one year of experience utilizing terminology of multiple body systems or in a multi-specialty department. Completion of an accredited medical transcriptionist course or equivalent may substitute for six months of experience
