BASIC FUNCTION
Perform Positron Emission Tomography (P.E.T.) examinations for clinical and research cases.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general direction, perform dedicated positron emission tomography examinations and develop nuclear medicine technology examination procedures through research. The complex examinations require assessing metabolic information, making decisions such as if additional transmission scans need to be performed, and troubleshooting equipment in a time-critical environment.
TYPICAL WORK
Perform complex Positron Emission Tomography examinations, transmission scans, and reconstructions utilizing a dedicated P.E.T. scanner in coordination with an on-site cyclotron and isotope supplier;
Process acquired P.E.T. data to generate a standard uptake value, judging the acceptable parameters for normal and abnormal tissue;
Develop nuclear medicine technology for clinical procedures and examinations;
Develop new P.E.T. examinations; create written protocols and scanning parameters;
Troubleshoot computer malfunctions with respect to fast dynamic imaging and multiple fields of view;
Develop and review guidelines for the use of high energy P.E.T. radiopharmaceuticals insuring standards of radiation safety;
Train others to perform basic P.E.T. functions;
Perform the work of nuclear medicine technologists;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Certified by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board or registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Nuclear Medicine AND two years of experience performing the work of a nuclear medicine technologist AND one year of experience working with dedicated positron emission tomography

Equivalent education/experience.
