BASIC FUNCTION
Propagate and care for trees, shrubs, and forage plants used in research, teaching, and/or campus landscape projects.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general supervision, perform nursery, greenhouse, or arboreta operations including soil analysis, receiving and shipping plants, and maintaining growth records on propagations.
TYPICAL WORK
Recommend varieties and quantities of plants to be grown;
Diagnose and treat plant diseases and pests;
Prepare bedding areas by sterilizing and mixing soils, cleaning bedding tables and sterilizing pots and containers used in nursery culture;
Propagate plants by cutting, seeding, grafting, layering and budding;
Plan, prepare, plant, feed, water, prune and maintain flower beds and landscaped areas;
Analyze soil for pH content; take tissue samples for analysis;
Receive and ship plants, seeds and bulbs; collect seeds from plants; maintain growth records;
Control environment by regulating heat, light, shade, humidity, etc., in greenhouse or nursery;
Assist in the collection of research data or prepare teaching materials and assist in demonstrations;
May repair, maintain and operate a variety of grounds mechanical equipment, systems, and apparatus;
May direct the work of others;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Three years of gardening or groundskeeping experience OR equivalent education/experience.
