BASIC FUNCTION
Maintain and operate engineering department machinery aboard an ocean research ship of approximately 2000 gross tons.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under direct supervision, perform routine maintenance and operation of propulsion or auxiliary machinery aboard a ship.
TYPICAL WORK
Perform general maintenance, of ship’s machinery and mechanical equipment;
Accomplish minor repairs to hull fittings and structure;
Lubricate machinery;
Monitor operation of propulsion and auxiliary machinery to insure proper and safe operation;
Assist in the repair of marine machinery;
Enter readings in engineering log and operating records;
Stand security watch as required;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Legal Requirement
U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner’s document endorsed with Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED)-Oiler rating.
