BASIC FUNCTION
Prepare and maintain payroll records, review and coordinate procedures; take corrective action as necessary; compile and ensure the accuracy of reports.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Senior-level class of series. Under general supervision, prepare and maintain payroll records. Determine appropriate courses of action within a framework of broad guidelines. completed work is reviewed through an analysis of documentation, records and reports. In smaller institutions, incumbents may be responsible for the payroll unit.
TYPICAL WORK
Input payroll data and perform routine audits to ensure accuracy and compliance with employee authorizations and state/federal requirements;
Perform periodic payroll audits; spot check to ensure accuracy and validity of deductions and records;
Ensure compliance with institutional, state and federal requirements in payroll procedures, computations and deductions;
Review procedures; evaluate practices to improve service and accuracy;
coordinate with insurance and retirement officer on deduction procedures;
Prepare periodic reports as required by the fiscal office and state or federal agencies;
Advise administrators, fiscal office or data processing center of procedural errors; take corrective action;
Prepare computer input documents required for preparation of a payroll;
Perform the duties of Payroll Technician I;
May provide basic employee benefit information to employees;
May be responsible for payroll unit;
May lead subordinate employees;
perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
One year of experience as an Accounting Assistant or Payroll Technician or equivalent; nine quarter hours or six semester hours of college-level course work in accounting principles may substitute for six months of required experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
