DEFINITION

Analyze the significance of research; record the results of that analysis in a variety of forms.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions allocated to this class conduct independent study of research literature and aid research planning in various institutions. Incumbents serve as collaborators in projects undertaken with staff members.

TYPICAL WORK

Evaluate research reports in related and tangential fields to groups of investigators with common interest; record the results of that evaluation in an abstract or a set of descriptors from a controlled vocabulary (thesaurus) for computerized storage and retrieval of abstract or citation of article;

Prepare data tabulations, bibliographic collations and review articles based on and extending previous analyses and evaluations;

Undertake publication projects as junior or senior collaborator with other staff members, temporary staff members, or members of faculty;

Maintain up-to-date thesaurus by identifying new research concepts, establishing their logical relationships to concepts already expressed in the thesaurus, and selecting and defining appropriate descriptors;

Consult with investigators and research manager planning research projects or programs at various institutions, and provide them with information on related scientific data already available;

Consult with investigators encountering unexpected problems with projects already underway; identity the cause of the difficulty and suggest means to overcome it;

Devise search strategies to retrieve needed information form center’s files;

Request and analyze collections of unpublished data related to center’s informational responsibility; analysis may include statistical evaluation;

Perform literature searches necessary to learn existence and secure copies of identified research reports requiring analysis;

Train clerical assistants in use of library and of existing directories and literature indexes, and in descriptive bibliography;

Recommend to head of center special projects, modification in existing services, or establishment of new services for center;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Baccalaureate Degree in a related science with two years professional level experience in literature analysis or closely related activity. Postgraduate education in science or information handling may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

The announcement of position vacancy (recruiting bulletin) may specify course work or experience within a specific discipline if determined necessary by the personnel officer. Selective certification from the employment list will be permitted to meet unique requirements of specifically identified positions.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
