CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Prepare and present news reports for KUOW radio programming including broadcast audio, web content, video, podcasts and events. Collect and analyze information for broadcast to the public on KUOW radio.

This single-series job class is distinguished from Reporter 1 and 2 by an emphasis on on-air newscasting of daily and breaking news.

BASIC FUNCTION

Plan, report, write, edit and voice newscasts and related broadcast content with an emphasis on daily and breaking news.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Reporting to an Editor or Assignment Editor and in support of daily and breaking news, develop local and national contacts and monitor sources such as wires and social media for breaking news, re-package coverage produced by producers and reporters for newscasts, and meet hourly and daily filing schedule that requires occasional evening and weekend work. Produce features and interviews as assigned. Present newscasts on the air, such as a mid-day newscast.

TYPICAL WORK

Typical working title is “Newscaster/Reporter”;

Write and produce newscast coverage with an emphasis on daily and breaking news;

Monitor sources such as wires and social media for breaking news;

Develop local and national contacts;

Re-package coverage produced by producers and reporters for newscasts;

Meet hourly and daily filing schedule that may require occasional evening and weekend work;

Produce features and interviews as assigned;

May back-up Reporters and Assignment Editor as assigned; and

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and three years of professional broadcast journalism experience including specific position requirements relating to news writing, radio production and audio editing; or equivalent combination of education/experience.
