CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Work with all KUOW departments to position KUOW as a leader in the social media space. This is a single-class series.
BASIC FUNCTION
Develop and deploy meaningful online outreach and promote reciprocity with users, influencers, bloggers, independent content creators, and diverse under-served audiences. Work closely with internal stakeholders to implement initiatives that add value to KUOW content and position KUOW as a leader in the social space.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under the supervisor of the Online Managing Editor, create effective ways to generate and maintain a community of online users. Manage KUOW social news accounts and promote social media use among staff, including providing protocols and training on effective uses of platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, photo sharing sites, storytelling sites, and other online tools in support of KUOW content and activities;
Develop and execute online outreach to build awareness of KUOW content such as news features, special coverage, initiatives and regular programming. Develop and sustain all of KUOW’s social media contacts and relationships within public media (NPR, PRI etc.). Lead KUOW’s social programming in breaking news situations. Create and edit content for local and national online platforms.
Function as the point person for user-generated content; provide a cohesive flow of information. Ensure that online posts comply with KUOW ethics, UW ethics and KUOW editorial standards.
Identify and recruit individuals to serve as guest writers, editors, photographers and videographers in support of KUOW online engagement activities and content;
TYPICAL WORK
Typical working titles are “Social Media Producer” and “Producer 2 – Social Media”;
Create effective ways to generate and maintain a community of online users, including e-list development and communication, event building, social media production and comments moderation;
Manage KUOW social news accounts and serve as promoter for social media use among staff, including providing protocols and training on effective uses of platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, photo sharing sites, storytelling sites, and other online tools in support of KUOW content and activities;
Develop and execute online outreach to build awareness of KUOW content such as news features, special coverage, initiatives and regular programming. Leads KUOW’s social programming in breaking news situations. Create and edit content for local and national online platforms;

Meet weekly with internal stakeholders to develop and track strategic activities. Report on activities’ effectiveness and evaluate social media activities of interest to the organization;
Identify and recruit individuals to serve as guest writers, editors, photographers and videographers in support of KUOW online engagement activities and content;
Develop and sustain all of KUOW’s social media contacts and relationships within public media (NPR, PRI etc.);
Compile and utilize subject-specific press lists and databases that include bloggers, social media journalists and editors, and organization and corporate social media outlets; and
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Education, Communications or a related field and two years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be proficient in PC environment and in Adobe Photoshop or equivalent photo editor and familiar with a variety of Web Content Management System (CMS) platforms, basic HTML, and Microsoft Office.
Requires knowledge of professional broadcast and journalistic standards and practices.
