Create multiplatform content found within the community. This is a single-class series.

BASIC FUNCTION

Working extensively outside the station in the community, develop and maintain a community engagement “beat” to involve the community in coverage of the news and in conversation about the news. Works out in our neighborhoods to join, enable, curate and listen to community conversations with the goal of better journalism.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under the supervision of the Director of Community Engagement, produce community engagement multimedia content for KUOW. Work with the Director of Community Engagement to identify and cultivate partners and stories within the community, with a commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices. Engage community members in person, on social media and via online interaction and serve as the liaison between community engagement and the newsroom/local content staff.

Pitch community engagement stories for on-air, online and/or face-to-face engagements and produce original content for all platforms relating to engagement (on-air, online, in-person events).

Conduct outreach for and participate in community forums, panels, roundtables, and meetings. Lead and/or co-host community discussions.

TYPICAL WORK

Typical working title is “Community Engagement Producer”;

Build new audience through on-air, online and in-person events;

Conduct outreach for and participate in community forums, panels, roundtables, and meetings;

Work with the Social Media Producer to explore new social tools and engagement techniques;

Network with colleagues leading engagement efforts in other newsrooms around the Puget Sound region; and

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field and three years of related work experience or equivalent combination of education/experience.

Requires knowledge of professional broadcast and journalistic standards and practices.
