CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Collect and analyze information for broadcast to the public on KUOW radio, including broadcast audio, web content, video, podcasts and events. This is the second level in a two-level series; the preceding level is Reporter 1.

BASIC FUNCTION

Identify and craft news stories and guide coverage of a broad variety of assignments.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Reporting to a news editor, maintain a wide variety of sources, including meetings and other events, if applicable. Gather information and audio for reports and programs. Identify and craft news stories and guide coverage of a broad variety of assignments. Break stories. Contribute news reports to daily newscasts and drivetimes. Provide “live” reports and host two-ways (interviews) at expert level. Develop ideas and proposals for reports and programs. Create reporting for website with writing and photography (supplying additional audio, visual material, related web resources). Serve as lead on special projects (documentary or series).

Typical working title is “Reporter;”

Guide coverage of a beat(s)/area of expertise/broad variety of assignments, break stories;

Maintain a wide variety of sources;

Develop ideas/proposals for reports and programs;

Contribute news reports to daily newscasts and drivetimes;

Deliver substantive reports quickly, providing rapid turnaround on varied subjects on a deadline;

Gather information and audio for reports and programs;

Pitch and report breaking news and feature stories;

Provide “live” reports and host two-ways (interviews) at expert level;

Deliver stories with fully developed on-air style and originality in writing;

Create reporting for website with writing and photography (supplying additional audio, visual material, related web resources);

Serve as lead on special projects (documentary or series);

Represent KUOW in the community;

Perform public outreach as needed;

May be called on to fill in as Editor and/or Host;

May travel at times; and

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and seven or more years of professional broadcast journalism experience, including experience in covering a beat and specific position requirements relating to news writing, radio production and audio editing software, as well as mastery of all recording and production equipment and techniques, and demonstrated strength in producing for the web; or equivalent combination of education/experience. Knowledgeable about emerging platforms and production techniques.
