CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Within the Institute for Health Metrics (IHME), develop and/or administer the datacenter infrastructure and health databases that are critical to IHME’s global health research activities
BASIC FUNCTION
Provide complex technical expertise in database or datacenter infrastructure development and/or administration requiring extensive knowledge of database software technologies and principles.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general supervision, independently develop and maintain database applications and systems and associated software and tools. Integrate complex database system and application technologies into reliable and effective platforms for achieving IHME’s technical research goals. Make recommendations and persuade senior leaders as to the adoption of new database engineering tools and practices that will provide IHME with the most stable, efficient, reliable, accurate and secure database structures. Participate in the prioritization of requests and initiatives for the organization as a whole. Participate in the development and delivery of new employee technical trainings. Database subject matter expert that is called on for novel solutions for complex issues on a regular basis. May lead staff.
TYPICAL WORK
Perform the duties of an IHME Database Administrator/Develop I;
Research, recommend, and implement distributed database software and hardware systems;
Work with system and database administrators to design data management environments;
Lead the installation, configuration, testing and fine-tuning of data base environments;
Develop, plan and track new database or enhancements to current database projects and tasks, and provide input to higher level administrators regarding iterative milestones and timelines for completions;
Lead the development, testing, deployment and documentation of data backup and recovery plans;
Manage various development, testing and production environments for internal and external applications and tools;
Design and improve automation and optimization processes allowing for rapid deployment, rapid recovery from failures, and database/application stability;
Implement and maintain application infrastructure monitoring and reporting tools;
Participate in developing and delivering technical trainings for new staff in conjunction with the Organizational Development and Training team;
Stay up to date on the latest technologies surrounding high performance operation systems, open source database management systems, and application deployment and large datasets,
May lead staff; and
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Mathematics, Engineering, Statistics or related and three years of related experience
OR
Equivalent combination of education/experience.
CLASS SERVICE EXEMPTION
Senior Computer Systems and Network Programming.
