CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Within the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), apply scientific knowledge to conduct research, analysis and evaluation of health data and health data sources, for the purpose of providing policymakers, donors, researchers and other stakeholders with quantitative evidence based hypotheses to make decisions that achieve better health for populations around the world.
BASIC FUNCTION
Develop and apply IHME research methodologies to analyze, evaluate and quantify health data from around the world and develop estimations of the comparative magnitude of health loss due to disease, injury, age, sex, geographic location, wealth, and other risk factors.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general direction, independently perform assigned tasks requiring the application of IHME research procedures and techniques. Apply highly developed analytic, statistical, coding and/or survey methodology skills; relying primarily on broad instructions and guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Regularly develop, revise, and/or make recommendations to change research protocols, health data sources and/or research methodologies. Regularly provide research or technical expertise for training content, mentorship and/or project management. Provide content for technical trainings, deliver technical trainings, provide mentorship to junior research staff, and provide project management to various aspects of a research project, including leading team members as needed.
TYPICAL WORK
Perform the duties of a Research Scientist I;
Independently carry out quantitative research, analyses and evaluation of health data and health data sources;
Develop and implement adaptations and modifications to a research project or process design;
Develop, quality check, and distribute complex data sets used in epidemiological and statistical analyses;
Develop and implement new computational and statistical methods and models. Create, test, and use relevant computer code (R, Python, STATA or equivalent). Maintain, modify, and execute analytic machinery;
Provide technical advice on the design of data collection methods, survey instruments and data management;
Draft technical and non-technical research presentations, manuscripts and journals for publication in scientific and general public journals, reports and summaries;
Lead and co-author scientific articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals;
Provide content for the development of technical research training for internal staff in or out of the position’s primary IHME department;
Teach technical research training for internal staff in or out of the position’s primary IHME department;
Assign, review and approve the work of research staff and research support staff;
Provide guidance and training to research staff and research support staff; and
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics, Biostatistics, math, economics, quantitative social sciences or related and four years of related work experience
