CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Within the Institute for Health Metrics Evaluation (IHME), support the development of scientific papers and publications, in fields such as but not limited to epidemiology, biostatistics, health survey methodology, health economics, demography and social determinants, as they relate to the global health metrics analysis, evaluation and hypothesis conducted at IHME.
BASIC FUNCTION
Create compelling technical and non-technical manuscript journals and publication materials for a diverse audience of IHME internal and external stakeholders.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general supervision, designs and defines the editorial standards for technical and non-technical manuscript journals and publication materials for IHME. Directly contributes to the dissemination of scientific analysis and hypothesis information in the field of population health metrics and evaluation.
TYPICAL WORK
Perform duties of an IHME Scientific Editor I;
Perform a broad range of publication functions, such as project management, publication medium selection, coordination of subject matter expert reviews, quality assurance, rewriting, copy editing, proofreading, and production;
Edit, proofread, and fact-check a wide variety of external and internal content to ensure clarity, accuracy, and effectiveness in language, graphics, and data presentation;
Write high-quality scientific articles for peer-reviewed journals, in conjunction with faculty lead and research team, that translate complex scientific data into language appropriate for the topic and journal’s target audience
Demonstrate a thorough understanding of IHME’s research audiences in order to summarize and present materials from peer-reviewed journal articles and other scientific outlets that feature IHME’s work;
Demonstrate an understanding of IHME’s research, analytic concepts, results, policy reports and visualization tools that are central to our work, including epidemiology, biostatistics, survey methodology, health economics, demography, social determinants, and education.
Possess expertise in using IHME’s data visualizations and other data products in order to assure factual accuracy and oversee quality assurance operations;
Act as the authority on the IHME Brand by answering style-related queries and overseeing the maintenance of IHME’s style guides;
In partnership with the IHME Scientific Communication team, works with journal editorial staff, and other IHME staff, administrators and executives to ensure that IHME’s article submissions meet journal standards with regard to style and voice;
Delegate editing, proofreading, and fact-checking assignments to editorial team members. Ensure balanced workloads and quality output;
Lead short to medium term projects as assigned such as, but not limited to researching and compiling analytics for publications, writing, and substantive editing of book chapters and policy reports;
Lead IHME staff involved in copyediting, proofreading, writing and fact-checking materials;
Design and lead trainings for IHME staff across different work environments, in editing, writing, proofreading, and fact-checking; and
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in English, Social Sciences, Health Science or related field and five years of experience,

Equivalent combination of education/experience.
