CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Within the UW Libraries, utilize specialized knowledge and skills to provide conservation efforts for library materials.

BASIC FUNCTION

Support the libraries in conserving collections by providing conservation and preservation project planning, outreach and highly complex conservation treatments.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Reporting to the Director of Preservation, in consultation with collection managers develop and maintain conservation programs, establish priorities, coordinate and provide conservation treatment.

TYPICAL WORK

Perform highly complex conservation treatment for a wide variety of general and special collections materials to include rare and unique paper based library materials;

Provide leadership, training and general direction to other conservation and preservation staff;

Consult with collection managers to create conservation plans and strategies;

Provide guidance in the preservation and accessibility of collections through staff training, exhibition support, public outreach, disaster recovery and response, and environmental monitoring;

Serve as a spokesperson for the institution and provides consultation, training, and coordinated professional development with other regional cultural heritage institutions;

May conduct and publish scholarly research related to conservation;

Perform conservation work adhering to the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice;

May supervise staff supporting conservation efforts;

May perform work of the Libraries Conservation Specialist 7; and

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in Conservation and minimum 1 year of relevant work experience

OR

Demonstration of a similar level of education and training required for the conservation of rare materials, such as completion of an apprenticeship with an established conservator, or other verifiable certification of advance training and education beyond a bachelor’s degree.

OR

Equivalent combination of education/experience.
