CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Within University of Washington Press (UW Press), perform specialized work related to the editing, design and production of titles published by UW Press. Projects range in book type and complexity from standard scholarly monographs to highly illustrated art history, visual culture, and regional trade titles. Other kinds of books include key regional reference works for scientists, translations of important literary works, and books about social justice topics written by scholar activists and for course use.
BASIC FUNCTION
Exercise responsibility for the production of approximately 25 to 30 titles annually.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under the general direction of the editing, design, and production (EDP) manager, the senior project editor exercises responsibility for the production of approximately 25 to 30 titles annually. Work closely with the rest of the EDP department and function as the point person for in-house colleagues, authors, and outside vendors on all projects they manage, from delivery of raw manuscript through finalization of printer-ready book files.
Projects range in book type and complexity from standard scholarly monographs to highly illustrated art history, visual culture, and regional trade titles. Other kinds of books include key regional reference works for scientists, translations of important literary works, and books about social justice topics written by scholar activists and for course use.
TYPICAL WORK
Exercise responsibility for the production of approximately 25 to 30 titles annually;
Prepare manuscripts for copyediting and design/typesetting, including setting editorial requirements and standards for each manuscript and communicating these requirements;
Hire, instruct and vet the work of freelance copy editors, proofreaders, indexers, and other vendors; liaising with authors;
Coordinate art production with design and production staff and with freelance cartographers or graphic artists;
Direct and liaise with outside typesetters through composition, and with outside packagers throughout production;
Vet author and proofreader corrections through all proof cycles, and ensure their accuracy; review and approve printers’ proofs;
Assess assigned projects for production: prepare and maintain production schedule and editorial budget, with due attention to editing needs, requested bound-book dates, and budgetary constraints;
Edit jacket copy, indexes, and small pieces (e.g., forewords) as required;
Participate in departmental and UW Press-wide meetings; and
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in the humanities or social sciences and 3 years of professional editorial and project management experience with books.
OR
Equivalent combination of education and experience.
